The Surface Engineering Association represents all the major trade associations within the finishing industries.  Its formation dates back to the early 1990s when the then Secretary of State for the Environment, Michael Heseltine, announced that he did not wish his department to deal with an assortment of small trade bodies which led to the formation of the Confederation of Finishing Industries.  The name was subsequently changed to the Surface Engineering Association with the individual trade bodies continuing to have their own committees reporting back to the SEA Executive Committee.
